The Chapter has expanded its youth program in 2014 by offering an after school fly tying class for interested Middle School students. Nine enthusiastic 6th Graders signed up and have been learning the basics of fly tying. The class instructors have been impressed with the excitement, ability, and attention of the students.

Mark Hendricks, lead instructor, has chosen flies that introduce the basics, are fairly easy to tie, and will catch fish. Both trout and blue gill flies are being taught. Hendricks is assisted by Karen Harrison, Bob Andrus, Jim Wilkinson, and Paul Mesack. All of the necessary equipment and materials are provided by the Chapter as well as funding which has been augmented by a donation from the Stephan family from gifts given in memory of their father, Jay Stephan.

In addition to the fly tying class, the Chapter sponsors three Trout in the Classroom projects at Grayling Middle School (2) and Roscommon High School (1). The Chapter also contributes to the Grayling High School Fly Fishing Club and has committed to providing equipment and one on one assistance with a casting unit for Grayling Middle School PE students.
